DDW Pic 248. Harper's Mill

Harper's Mill
This picture was taken inside of Harper's Mill on Tom Sawyer Island in the Magic Kingdom. This shot of the mother bluebird in her nest was a tough one to get, as the gears are spinning rapidly. The birds nest in the gear is a reference to the 1937 Disney short, "The Old Mill." An owl from the short can also be found in the rafters of the mill. The name "Harper" has two references associated with it. First, and most obvious, is Joe Harper who was a friends with Tom Sawyer. It also pays homage to Harper Goff, who was an Imagineer who was instrumental in the design of both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

  1. Thanks for posting this! I have read about the history behind the nest- never actually saw it though. Probably too busy looking for paintbrushes.

  2. My pleasure Jesse! It took me quite a few tries to get this picture. The gears actually move pretty quick!
